Basic options: Hit Esc to bring up the main menu, where you can adjust video, audio, and game settings as well as re-map your key bindings.

Tip:  For a complete list of keys, hit Esc, then select “Key Bindings”. Scroll down to see all the possible keys.

Movement: Use the A,W,D,S keys to move around the world. Alternatively, hold down both mouse buttons to walk forward; moving the mouse at this point turns your character. There is also a “Click to move” option in the “Interface Options” menu which will allow you to move your character by right-clicking the area of the ground you wish to move to.

Camera: Hold down the left mouse button to look around the world. Hold down the right mouse button to turn your character using the mouse. You can zoom the camera in and out with either the mouse wheel or the Home and End keys.

Interacting: Left-click selects objects and NPCs in the game, while right-click attacks a monster, activates an object, or talks to an NPC. The mouse cursor is context-sensitive. If you mouse over an object that you can interact with, an icon will appear on your mouse cursor indicating the type of action that will occur if you right-click (sword = attack, cog = manipulate, speech balloon = talk, etc.).

Attacking: To attack a creature, move within range (indicated by the appearance of the attack cursor when you mouse over the creature; a grayed-out cursor means you are out of range) and right-click the creature. You will enter attack mode. Move your character next to the creature, and you will automatically begin to attack. Instead of right-clicking a creature, you may also select the “Attack” icon from the Action Bar.

Action Bar: The Action Bar at the bottom of the screen can be used to hotkey your spells, special abilities, or frequently used items, such as food and water (which give back health and mana, respectively). You can activate these either by left-clicking on them or by typing the number corresponding to the slot of the spell or ability you wish to use. Mousing over the icons will show you a tooltip containing the name of the spell or ability. You can also consult your spell or ability books (for casters, the “Spellbook & Abilities” button on the Action Bar) to get a full description of each ability or spell your character may have. You can rearrange your Action Bar by dragging the icons around. You can also add new spells or abilities to this bar as you receive them by dragging them from your spell or ability book. You can also place inventory items, such as health potions, in the bar for easy activation.

Tip:  Hold down Shift and use the mouse wheel to quickly flip between Action Bars. You can also use the up and down arrow keys instead of the mouse wheel.

Grouping, trading, and other character interaction: To invite someone into a group, left-click that player and then right-click on the player’s portrait along the top of the screen to bring up a menu of possible interactions. One of these options is to “Invite” (into your group). There are several other available interactions with characters, including inspecting them, or challenging them to duels.

Note: These commands will not work with players of the opposing faction.

Sound: Control-S toggles sound effects. Control-M toggles music.

Character information: Click on the button in the Interface Panel (which is to the right of the Action Bar) that contains your character’s portrait. This will bring up your Character Info panel, which includes your Reputation and Skills panels.

Leveling: Once you reach level 10, you will begin gaining talent points as you level up, which you can immediately apply to your character by opening up the Talent Info page by clicking on the Talents button in the Interface Panel. The Talents page shows all the new talents you can purchase.

Gaining new spells & abilities: New abilities and skills are not gained automatically. You must visit a trainer specific to your class to purchase them. There are other ways to gain spells and abilities, such as completing class-specific quests.

Looting: Right-click the monster’s corpse to bring up the loot pane. You can then click items in the loot pane to place them into your backpack. To open your backpack, click the “Backpack” button in the lower right part of the screen and mouse over the items inside to see what they are.

Getting additional bags: You can put an additional bag in each empty bag space in the lower right part of your screen (next to the backpack). Use your additional bags the same way you do your backpack.

Slash commands: The following are some of the common slash commands in the game, which allow you to do certain things just by typing them into the chat prompt. Hit Enter to bring up the chat prompt.

Note:  You can use the Tab key to cycle through possible slash commands. For example, if you type “/a” and hit Tab a few times, you will start scrolling through all the slash commands that start with “a”.

Play Requirements

  • You must upgrade a World of Warcraft account before you can play World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.
  • You must have an active Broadband Internet connection to play World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

Why You Need Your Authentication Key: You cannot set up an official World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King account without a valid Blizzard-issued Authentication Key. This means that you will be unable to login and play the game.

Creating your character

Creating your character is very easy. From the Create Character screen, select your race and class. These decisions will determine what abilities are available to your character. All of the other options on the character creation screen will help you in customizing your characters appearance in-game, but will not affect your character’s abilities or statistics.

Note: Keep in mind that Horde and Alliance characters will not be able to play with each other.

Horde vs. Alliance split

The Horde is at war with the Alliance for the world of Azeroth. Horde and Alliance players are unable to form groups with each other, trade, create guilds together, or even talk to each other. If you have friends you wish to play with, be sure that you select races that are allied with each other. The characters on your account can be of either Horde or Alliance faction, but you and your friends must be of the same faction to play together.

  • Horde races: Orcs, Tauren, Trolls, Undead and Blood Elves.
  • Alliance races: Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes, Night Elves and Draenei.

Character customization

You can customize various aspects of your character’s appearance. If you prefer, simply click the “Randomize” button to have the game create a random character for you. You can hit this button several times until it creates a character that you like. There will also be ways to further customize your character in the game, both in terms of appearance (such as with weapons and armor) and in terms of attributes and skills your character can learn.

3.3 Warrior FAQ – Read First, Post Later

Welcome to the Warrior FAQ.

What you will see in this post: Simple, concise answers to frequently asked questions.

What you won’t see in this post: The detailed reasoning behind those answers, advanced Warrior concepts, anything about the upcoming stat/talent changes for Cataclysm.

If your question isn’t answered here, or if you’re curious as to precise details as to why something is the way it is, you’ll have to read the relevant discussion topics. Furthermore, these are the basics, a starting point. If you’re wondering why other Warriors are better than you, it’s probably because they’re doing something that isn’t covered in this FAQ.

———-

Arms

Q: What is the best Arms spec?
A: The most common is a variation on 54/17/0.

Q: Why did you use Poleaxe Spec?
A: You need 5 points in one of the weapon masteries. Just put them in whatever weapon spec befits your best weapon.

Q: What about the 55/8/8 Incite spec?
A: If you’re reading this, you probably don’t have the gear/knowledge required for that.

Q: What rotation should I be using?
A: Arms uses a priority system. Overpower (If <1.5 seconds before a TfB proc), Rend (Do Not Clip) > Mortal Strike > Overpower > Execute > Slam. Heroic Strike at 80+ Rage. Every GCD should be used for something; waiting for a cooldown or proc is lost DPS.

Q: That priority list is wrong. I do top DPS in my guild and I prioritize-
A: That priority list is simplified. There are all sorts of conditions which will change your priorities, but discussing them goes beyond the purpose of a simple FAQ.

Q: When do I use Bladestorm?
A: In a single target fight, on cooldown between Taste for Blood usage. On fights where AoE may be necessary, save it for those parts of the fight.

Q: What good is Shattering Throw?
A: It can increase raid DPS during Bloodlust if there are a number of other physical DPS present. However, it’s a personal DPS loss.

Q: What are my stat priorities?
A: Get 8% hit. After that, Strength > ArP > Crit > Agi > 2AP > Haste == Expertise.

Q: Why don’t we cap Expertise?
A: Because of Overpower. You may lose a GCD and some rage, but ultimately you gain less from lowering your chance to dodge than you do from other stats. If you’re frequently using Sunder Armor for your raid, Expertise does become more valuable.

Q: Should I gem for ArP? What gear is BiS?
A: Use Landsoul’s Spreadsheet or Rawr to find out.

Q: Doesn’t Sunder Armor mean you only need 80% ArP?
A: No. Sunder/Expose Armor and Faerie Fire work separately from ArP. You want your ArP Rating, Battle Stance bonus and (if you use maces) Mace Specialization bonus to total 100%.

Q: What should I use to enchant my weapon?
A: Berserking.

Q: My raid leader wants me to use Sunder Armor, I don’t want to lose DPS.
A: Do it. It’s a DPS gain for the raid, and for you as well if no one else is willing/able. No, it isn’t a better idea for the Rogues to use Expose Armor.

Fury

Q: What is the best Fury spec?
A: Fury typically goes with 19/52/0.

Q: What about Commanding Presence and Booming Voice?
A: Take those instead of Unbridled Wrath and Imp Cleave if your raid setup requires it.

Q: What about Enrage?
A: No.

Q: But it’s 10% more damage!
A: Only when it procs, which very rarely happens in raids. It’s not worth it.

Q: What about Improved Berserker Rage?
A: No.

Q: What rotation should I be using?
A: Bloodthirst > Whirlwind > Slam (Bloodsurge). Heroic Strike when you have 50+ Rage. At very high gear levels Heroic Strike will effectively replace every mainhand weapon swing.

Q: Should I use Slam when I don’t have a Bloodsurge proc?
A: No.

Q: What about when I can Execute?
A: At lower gear levels use Execute in place of Slams, and only Heroic Strike at 80+ Rage. At higher gear levels (iLvl 245+) Slam becomes better than Execute, and you can Heroic Strike more often.

Q: When do I use Death Wish and Recklessness?
A: Use Death Wish on cooldown, but try to line it up with Bloodlust whenever possible. Recklessness should only be used during a free GCD shortly before WW and BT come off cooldown. Do not delay either for the cooldown, it isn’t worth it.

Q: What good is Shattering Throw?
A: It can increase raid DPS during Bloodlust if there are a number of other physical DPS present. However, it’s a personal DPS loss.

Q: What are my stat priorities?
A: Get 8% hit (including Precision), 26 Expertise. After that, Strength > ArP > Crit > Agi = 2AP = Haste > Hit.

You want 100% from ArP rating.

Q: What should I use to enchant my weapon?
A: Berserking.

Q: What about my offhand?
A: Still Berserking.

Q: Should I put Bryntroll in my offhand?
A: No. Proc weapons suck in the offhand. If you have a mainhand better than Bryntroll, find a better offhand.

Q: But I don’t have have a better offhand yet!
A: You have Landsoul’s Spreadsheet and Rawr available to you. Figure it out.

Q: My raid leader wants me to use Sunder Armor, I don’t want to lose DPS.
A: Do it. It’s a DPS gain for the raid, and for you as well if no one else is willing/able. You also suffer the least impact of any class/spec save for Protection, plus your DPS will increase.

Protection

Q: What spec should I use?
A: A variation on 15/3/53.

Q: I use this spec and these glyphs-
A: This isn’t DPS, there is no be all and end all spec or set of glyphs. Read the Protection thread and make decisions based on your situation.

Q: What’s my maximum threat rotation?
A: It isn’t a rotation, but a very simple priority system. Shield Slam > Revenge > Devastate, and use Heroic Strike as often as possible.

Q: Does Glyph of Devastate change this?
A: Using Glyph of Devastate will increase its threat enough that it will be better threat than Revenge at most gear levels, and particularly with a high iLvl weapon. Revenge will still be more rage efficient.

Q: What about AoE packs?
A: Thunderclap and Shockwave become your top priorities. Use Cleave instead of Heroic Strike. Shield Block will greatly reduce your incoming damage, and boost damage from the Damage Shield talent.

Q: What kind of weapon do I want?
A: A fast 1H tanking weapon.

Q: But slower weapons do more damage with Devastate!
A: Slow weapons also reduce how often you can Heroic Strike and Cleave. Stick to fast weapons unless you have bad luck with drops.

Q: What are my stat priorities?
A: 540 defense (689 Defense Rating). Stamina and Armor.

Q: What about avoidance?
A: If you need avoidance, Dodge is better than Parry.

Q: What about Block?
A: It’s not bad, but they’re adding diminishing returns soon. Don’t pass up gear with Block, but don’t specifically gear for it either.

Q: My threat sucks, what should I do?
A: Expertise is your best single target threat stat before you hit 26 expertise, it gets more confusing after that. Strength is the best all around threat stat and for AoE. Look for tanking gear with these stats.

Q: But I’ll lose Stamina/Dodge/Gearscore if I do that!
A: Welcome to the world of tanking trade-offs.

Q: I keep dying. What I am doing wrong?
A: You may be undergeared, using a wrong strategy, standing in the fire, failing to use/time your survival cooldowns or have too few/bad healers. Make sure it isn’t one of the first four.

Q: Who should get my Vigilance?
A: Whichever DPS does the most threat. This is usually your top DPS, but not always.

Q: Why are Indestructible Potions so important?
A: Because you can spend almost 4 minutes of any fight with an additional 3500 armor. You can chug one before entering combat and still be able use another during the fight. The damage you mitigate through one of these far outweighs what a Runic Health Potion heals.
